Grocery Shopping Blues
If I could take a pill that would supply me with every ounce of nutrition that I needed, I would take it in a heartbeat. That way I would never have to worry or think about, what the hell I’m going to eat today. Oh wait, that’s not going to do me any good. I have kids now. They didn’t come with instructions, but I’m pretty sure that it’s my responsibility to feed them. Ugh! That leaves me with literally my most dreaded chore in the world… grocery shopping. Actually, it is even worse than that…grocery shopping with kids.
My three-year-old tries to dictate which store we shop based on what he gets there. Meijer hands out suckers and Target gives free cookies. He even has his little brother in on the game. There is no sneaking past a hand out zone with these two. At least the bribes buy me a little time before the meltdowns occur.
Between the toy aisles, corralling my kids, rifling through coupons, trying to figure out what to buy, and pushing my way through all of the other moms, I’m exhausted and never feel like I bought a thing. That is why I am seriously considering online grocery shopping. There are so many choices out there and if I can figure out what food to buy that will actually make a meal, the convenience might be worth any extra cost.
One store that I am ready to give a go is Amazon.com. (Yes, they even sell groceries.) They have a huge selection of organics, name brand non-perishables, and free shipping. Amazon Grocery also just started a program where you can have items that you regularly use shipped to you every one, two, three, or six months. Not to mention, if you use their Subscribe and Save Plan you can save an extra 15% of the items you order. The only drawback to Amazon’s Grocery Store is that you have to buy in bulk. So, while you get the convenience of kid-free shopping, you have to find some place to store everything.
Now, I realize that I will still have to make weekly treks to the store for frozen, dairy, and produce items, but my goal is to cut down the time I spend there. I would love to hear from anyone who has tried an online grocery store. Was it worth it? Did you save time? Money? In the next few weeks, I plan to implement kid-free grocery shopping. I will order some food items online and let you know how it goes.
